THE HISTORY OF DEVIATION

Deviation Winter Ensemble was formed during the winter of 2003 when Hogan High School was unable to perform for the winter season due to a lack of members. After a few phone calls, students from Hogan and Jesse Bethel High School as well as one student from Solano Middle School came together and formed the guard which was known as Hogan Independent. The group competed in the California Color Guard Circuit (CCGC) and was first evaluated under the Independent Regional A division with their show entitled Tarzan 2004. At the end of the evaluation, the group was bumped up to the Independent National A division and in the end, took home a 3rd place trophy at championships.

During the summer of 2004, Hogan Independent gained 3 new members and changed its name to what is now known as Deviation Winter Ensemble. Living up to their name, the group followed their fun filled Tarzan show with one which was more serious. Romeo & Juliet showcased the group's ability to change from one mood to another as well as being able to add a twist to the original Shakespearian play. It was a rather successful year where Deviation brought home a 2nd place plaque at the 2005 CCGC championships.

In 2006, Deviation suffered through quite a few dilemmas. Towards the start of the winter season, with half of a show already completed, Deviation lost its instructor, causing a split in the guard where half stayed in Deviation and the other half moved to Jesse Bethel's guard. After posting in search of a new instructor, Deviation met up with the past instructor of Mt. Diablo and gained 4 more members. With a new instructor and a completely new show Deviation ended up in 4th at the 2006 CCGC championships.

However, at the end of the 2006 season, the guard lost one of its beloved members, Audri, to lupus. In the 2007 season, Deviation dedicated their Chronicle's of Deviation show to Audri under the instruction of former member, Eric James Domingo. During this season Deviation lost its members from Mt. Diablo but reunited with friends from Jesse Bethel's guard as well as gain other new members bringing the member count to fifteen! Under a new direction and a new light, Deviation was able to take 3rd place at the 2007 CCGC Championships and 3rd place at the 2007 WGI Hayward Regional.

In the 2008 season, Deviation grew in technique and skill level which allowed them to promote from Independent A to Independent Open in the CCGC circuit. Their show, entitled "Within The Captured Elements," featured music from popular cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender. During this season Deviation lost a few members but gained 2 new members from former competitor, Jefferson Independent. Together, Deviation placed 3rd at the 2008 CCGC Championships, in the 2008 WGI Union City Regional and 2nd in the 2008 WGI West Power Regional.

Last season (2009) Deviation performed the show titled, "Abducted Eyes". Despite continual facility issues and a decrease in members, Deviation managed to rehearse every week allowing them to bring a spectacular performance for the 2009 CCGC Championships in the Open Division. This performance received 2nd place and gained much support from its viewing audience.

Deviation will once again continue on to the 2010 Winterguard Season. Auditions will be held from August 12-14 at The National Guard Facility in Vallejo, CA. If you are interested in our group we encourage to come to our auditions to see what we're all about! We love you Audri, you will always be the angel in our hearts and the inspiration of our lives.
